TIME/AGE/DATES
Time references are always signed
first. When indicating a time, like 8 pm or 3 am, it is signed time 8 night or time 3
morning. The sign for time is signed before the number. To indicate a.m. or
p.m., add the sign for morning or night, do not spell a.m.
or p.m.
When signing someone's age, first the sign for age is done then
the number. For example: My mother is 45 years old. You would sign: My mother age 45.
Dates are signed how they are
said. For example: 1976 is signed 19 and then 76.
NEGATION
Negative sentences are made in several ways. We can use words such
as not, none, no, or other negative words. Any word we use to form a negative must also be
accompanied with a head shake and eyebrows squeezed together. When we write negative
sentences, we place a _____n_____ above the sentence to show that we want the sentence
signed with negative markers (using a negative word plus head shake and eyebrows).
Sometimes we make negatives in ASL by using words such as DON'T-KNOW, DON'T-WANT OR
DON'T-LIKE. These three glosses all have signs using an outward twisting motion as part of
the regular sign.
