INFORMATION SHEET NO. 1
GRAMMAR RULES FOR SENTENCE TYPES
You reviewed ASL sentence types in Task 1. Remember there are eight basic types: Declarative, Yes/No, Negative Yes/No,
Wh-Q, Rh-Q, Commands (Imperative), Negative and Conditional. Please read the detailed information from Task 1. Here is a short review.
- Declaratives make a statement with the head facing straight forward.
- Yes/No questions ask a question that is to be answered with yes, no, or maybe. Yes/No movements include raised eyebrows, head forward, and eyes looking directly at the person.
- Negative Yes/No questions act like Yes/No but the question has a negative in it. The eyebrows are raised, but the head shakes negatively.
- Wh-Q ask specific questions using words such as, who, what, where, etc. Eyebrows squeeze together or brows squinted.
- Rh-Q ask a question you answer yourself.
- Commands require direct eye contact and the verb done with sharp, tense movements.
- Negatives can use words such as no, not, or they can use negative incorporated glosses, such as Don’t-care or Don’t-want.
- Conditionals require a word such as if to set up the situation.
