GRAMMAR RULES FOR SENTENCE TYPES

You reviewed ASL sentence types in Task 1. Remember there are eight basic types: Declarative, Yes/No, Negative Yes/No, Wh-Q, Rh-Q, Commands (Imperative), Negative and Conditional. Please read the detailed information from Task 1. Here is a short review.

  1. Declaratives make a statement with the head facing straight forward.
  2. Yes/No questions ask a question that is to be answered with yes, no, or maybe. Yes/No movements include raised eyebrows, head forward, and eyes looking directly at the person.
  3. Negative Yes/No questions act like Yes/No but the question has a negative in it. The eyebrows are raised, but the head shakes negatively.
  4. Wh-Q ask specific questions using words such as, who, what, where, etc. Eyebrows squeeze together or brows squinted.
  5. Rh-Q ask a question you answer yourself.
  6. Commands require direct eye contact and the verb done with sharp, tense movements.
  7. Negatives can use words such as no, not, or they can use negative incorporated glosses, such as Don’t-care or Don’t-want.
  8. Conditionals require a word such as if to set up the situation.
