This course will be hosted on ANGEL. Please go to angelccs.spokane.edu, follow the login instructions, and select English 102 Fall 09 from your course list. When I finish writing it, the syllabus will be in the Week 1 folder under the Lessons tab. In the meantime, here's a message I sent to enrolled students regarding the required books for the course:
I'm still working on the syllabus and assignments, but I wanted to give you some advance notice about the books in case you want to shop around for the best prices on them. There are two required books:
Aravind Adiga's The White Tiger (ISBN: 978-4165-6260-3)
Graff, Birkenstein, and Durst's "They Say/I Say" with Readings (ISBN: 978-0-393-93174-7)
Adiga's book is the college's core book this year, so you may be able to pick up a free copy if you poke around campus. The Graff, Birkenstein, and Durst book is a little tricky; there are two books out there with similar authors and titles. Be sure to get the edition with the readings. It's more expensive than the one without readings, but you won't be able to do the assignments without the readings. To be sure you get the right edition, search for it by ISBN rather than by author/title.
I'll be loading the syllabus and assignments into ANGEL in the next few days--definitely before Monday! In the meantime, please start reading those books as soon as you get your hands on them. You won't have to read all of the readings in "They Say/I Say," but I will ask you to read the first 148 pages (it goes very quickly, I promise). And we'll read all of The White Tiger (it also goes very quickly because it's a great story).
If you don't know what I'm referring to when I write about ANGEL, it's the course management system that replaced Blackboard. Go to angelccs.spokane.edu on the Web, follow the login instructions, and select English 102 Fall 09 from your course list. When I finish the syllabus, I'll put it in the Week 1 folder under the Lessons tab. In the meantime, if you have any questions, please send me an email at jareda@spokanefalls.edu.
I'm looking forward to working with you. Talk to you soon.
