  Our View: Campus continually disrespected.

On any given day, there are around 5,000 people at SFCC. Whether the cause for being here is for monetary gains, or educational needs, we share a common purpose: a better life. No matter our age, color, or creed, all of us are here to create new possibilities. Individual stays will vary in length, but one thing is for certain: eventually all will leave and go towards their future.

That being said, this is not our home. This land is permanent, our stay here is temporary. Our current society isn’t the first to share this school or it’s knowledge, nor will it be the last. It would be wise to remember this and work at maintaining the beauty and preserving this institution that has served us well.

We didn’t walk into a litter-sprinkled, graffiti-covered landscape, so why should the next group that needs SFCC have to? Really think about this question as you recall the last time you saw trash on the ground and didn’t pick it up. The same goes for the graffiti that keeps rearing its ugly face. Some of the words and symbols are sexual in nature, others are racial; all these writings are intended to cause fear and pain. What right do any of us have to deface these doors and walls with messages of ignorance and hate? There is sadness, anger, and disgust when one sees these marks on various bathrooms and walls. These same feelings also apply to a student body and faculty that continue to let these acts of defilement occur in their presence.

Is this how this culture wants to be remembered, as an ignorant, immature group who let our fellow students mistreat their school and didn’t bother to do something about it?

The next time you see someone causing harm towards this campus, stop them in the act, and make it your problem. At the very least, inform security so they can help catch the perpetrator and prevent these crimes from being committed. Hold accountable the gall and audacity of an individual who chooses to commit these acts of destruction. If each of us would show a little initiative in keeping this campus clean, and stop criminals in the act, we should leave this school the way we found it – ready for the next generation.
