Communicator
If I were to have a garage sale to raise money for something that I deemed worthy, I would put more effort into promoting it than the student senate does into promoting costly events on campus. True there are people paid to take on such responsibilities and they meet and exceed the criteria set forth. However, it is a sad state of affairs when the student body at SFCC has nothing more than a hard-to-find activities calendar and a couple “A” frames randomly set around campus to help guide them to the events that gobble up the thousands paid into an activities fund each and every year.
Spring Fling was the latest disaster where the SFCC student senate participated in throwing the event and few participated in participating in it. The success of an event seems as though it is based on how much we spend and has little to do with how many lives are enriched by it.
I could sit here and throw one man under the bus and make it known that the “Shame on You” section of The Communicator was still up and running, but I feel that there is more involved with this problem of promotions than those elected to spearhead it. The students at SFCC have a responsibility to get involved with their school as well as their money. The students at SFCC have a very cavalier way of not getting involved with anything that could get their hands dirty. Students are too quick to go to class and run from school as soon as possible. These are to be the most important years of our careers and lives. The people that we meet as well as the activities that we involve ourselves in will define who and what we become.
I watched a spoken word artist speak on the May 16 in Sub Lounges A/B. It was sad to see a professional that was in from out of town, paid for by my money as well as everyone else that pays tuition at SFCC, broadcast her highly paid skills to a crowd of eight, not 88 or 288. This was no slouch of a speaker; she is nationally known in the entertainment industry for her skills in communication and poetry. Google the name Shanelle Gabriel and see the venues she has done. Fortunately I was assigned to be there by my 11:30 class or I would have missed it.
I may pay less to go to SFCC than I would if I was at Gonzaga or WSU, but I tell you what, as a starving college student it really doesn’t matter where I go, it matters if the money that I spend is used wisely. To me it is a two-part solution. If I have to pay the bill for these events I might as well utilize the products that I am purchasing. It is hard, however, to use products if I am unaware of their existence. Promoting the things that I am forced to buy would be a great help to me and all of the other paying customers at SFCC as well, don’t you think?
