The NWAACC womens track and field finals were held May 22-23 at Spokane Falls Community College. CCS women dominated the meet and swept the championships.
Head Coach Larry Beatty was proud of his team. He was honored with the Coach of the Year award.
“The girls really worked hard this year and there were a lot of Division I scholarships among them,” said Beatty. “They competed all year long in the classroom and on the field.”
Beatty’s hard discipline and coaching showed as the women took the NWAACC title, easily outscoring the second place winners by 121 points.
“They were just dominating, at one point I had them back-off,” said Beatty
Leading the pack for the women were Corrisa Hutchinson, Lynnea Brown, Rachel Garcia, Chanel James and the 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams. Hutchinson, Women’s Athlete of the Meet, took first in the discus throw and shot put. In the javelin Brown took first muscling out the competition by more than 10m. Garcia rounded out the throwers side with a first place win in the hammer throw.
The sprinters also showed their teammates they could turn in first place wins. They took first in the 4x100m relay (Nicole Nida, Tayor Cook, Stephanie Hill, Chanel James) and in the 4x400m relay (Angela Shearer, Stephanie Hill, Nicole Nida, Taylor Cook). Karen Owens took first in the 3000m Steeplechase and Janae Larson in the 5000m run. The star of the meet was freshman Chanel James. James took 1st in the 100m dash, long jump, triple jump and second in the 200m dash.
After winning her third event and running the last leg of the 4x100m, James said “Its an awesome feeling.”” I had a lot adrenaline and just knew I needed to do well.”
James took home two awards: Women High Point and Women Athlete of the Meet; which she shared with fellow teammate Hutchinson.
“I came to the meet ready to win and was expecting to do so. I worked hard all year and believed I could win,” Said James. “I am ready for next year, I want to win the 200m and break all the records.”
“Chanel is fun to watch, she easily could have left with four wins but it took a meet record to beat her” Beatty said.
Beatty looks foreward to next year and a chance to repeat.
