The CCS baseball team battled through a rebuilding year, ending the season without qualifying for the NWAACC championships.
The Sasquatch will lose eight sophomores out of the thirty-six man roster. Mostly consisting of freshman, the team hopes to contend next year for the NWAACC title after turning in a 18-23 record.
“It sucked not making it to the tournament; we just couldn’t describe the felling,” said Cody Reeves, one of the team’s sophomores.
“We didn’t have a good season, pitching wasn’t where we thought it would be,” Assistant Head Coach Barry Matthews said. “Every game our team was either not hitting, fielding or doing all the little things right. The season left a sour taste in the guy mouth, a lot of them feel embarrassed and is going motivate them to work their tail off.”
Though the season was not so much a team success, there were few individuals who had a very productive season. Freshman Mark Purser and Cory Kreighbaum were named to the Eastern Region NWAACC All-Star team as outfielders. Kreighbaum led the team with 32 RBI. Sophomore pitcher Tucker Seitz and infielder Cody Reeves were also named to the All-Star team. Reeves tied for first amongst team leader in home runs and led the team in batting average with .432.
Reeves turned in one of the best seasons in CCS history. He is currently being recruited by four schools: Central Washington, Western Oregon, Dakota State and Shawn East State.
“They (Purser and Kreighbaum) had good freshman campaigns, we’re all excited to see them and what they do as sophomores,” said Matthews “Reeves season was just fun to watch. It was his season, I don’t think I can remember a game where he didn’t have a hit. Everything was rolling for him.”
“The game against Green River was the most memorable,” Reeves said. “I went 4 of 5 and turned a triple play. We won 17-2.”
Next year the Sasquatch hope to make a run for the NWAACC title. They are bringing in a good recruiting class, six players total and a transfer Branden Hughes.
“It exciting when we look at the guys returning and the guys coming in,” said Matthews “It was pretty depressing not making it to the tournament, something we stride for to do all year; we don’t want to let that happen again.”
