Oktoberfest is Big hit

Oktoberfest is a 16-day festival held each year in Munich, Germany during late September and early October. With some six million people attending every year, it is one of the most famous events in the city of Munich, Germany and the world’s largest fair.

The festival is held on an area named Theresienwiese (Field of Therese.) Often called “d’ Wiesn” for short. Beer plays a central role in the fair, with every festival beginning with a keg of beer tapped by the Mayor of Munich who declares, “O’zapft is” which is Bavarian for it is tapped.

German Klub held their version of Oktoberfest in the SUB lounges A, B and C on October 18th. For $2.50 the German Klub provided bratwurst, sauerkraut, brotchen known as bread rolls along with German Löwen Deli Mustard on the side and root beer. The German Klub also provided karaoke for participators to go up on stage in the midst of bright lights and an audience to sing to their heart’s content.

German Klub’s purpose is to promote German culture on campus and is open to anybody who is interested in the culture.

“We do this through major events such as Oktoberfest, Karneval and FoosFest, which is a tournament that we do in spring,” Connor Chamberlin said, president of the German Klub, “The German Klub shows multiple movies throughout the year, which are really descriptive of German culture.”

The Karneval last year had a sign-up sheet for other clubs to participate.

“It was a huge success,” Chamberlin said.

German Klub works closely with the German classes. People from German Klub tutor lower classmen. The 201 German class tutors to the 101, 102 and 103 classmen.

“I want to teach the German Klub how to work as a team to achieve objectives,” Chamberlin said.

“Having been in organizations that do not have effective teams, I want to make sure that my people in the German Klub are trained well,” Chamberlin said, “It makes for a more fun time and less stressful times.”

The German Klub on the Falls campus has existed since the year 1988. The German Klub displays German culture and language at various campus activities. In winter quarter the German Klub sponsors a German Karneval/Mardi Gras in the SUB lounges A, B and C.

In spring quarter the Volkswalk is German Klub’s main event. Near the end of spring quarter, the Falls puts on a Spring Festival. German Klub’s contribution is offering the Volkswalk. After walking or running on a marked path around the school, finishers are entitled to enjoy a free plate of fruit and a sports drink. Winners that are established in the Volkswalk also get a free T-Shirt. Keep your eyes open for information posted around the SFCC campus.
