With the snow melted away, green grass, buried keys and months old cigarette butts are now exposed for all to see.
The number of cigarette butt containers through out campus to date has proved to be not enough compared to the number of smoking students. Arden Crawford, Campus Facility Manager of SFCC went to the Student Senate on May 1 with a proposal for nearly $2450 to put up 10 urgently needed new cigarette butt containers around high traffic areas, with eventually 10 more for the future.
“I think Stevie Wonder could look around the campus and see that we have a lot of cigarette butts on the ground around campus,” Crawford said.
According to Crawford, the containers will cost $296.40 each, including shipping from Canada. Each receptacle weighs 14 pounds, and holds approximately 1,000 cigarette butts.
A map has been made of the areas in which containers are located and where there should be more. The utilization of each building including traffic, times of use and such are all taken into consideration on choosing where the receptacles are put.
Buildings such as sn’wey’mn, 10, 19, 13 and 9. There are currently only a few located around in the area of sn’wey’mn and none located anywhere around 9, according to Crawford.
This is not the first time this issue has been brought to student officials. In 2001, the student senate initially funded the containers as well as smoke shelters in an effort to clean up the campus.
At this particular meeting, there was not enough members present to vote on this action item, postponing the issue for a later date.
Crawford does not come to the senate with light hopes, according to Heather McKenzie, advisor to the student senate. He only comes when help is needed on his end, according to McKenzie.
“Your satisfaction is our goal,” Crawford said.
